Miscellania

Random thoughts for this fine Tuesday:
  • I watched Caddyshack for the first time. It definitely makes my top ten list. Top Ten Overrated Movies of All Time, that is.
  • I saw Toy Story 3 on Saturday. It was surprisingly intense. It's most definitely not a G-rated movie. It's PG all the way. That may seem a minor quibble, but for parents of some young children the distinction is important. That aside, the movie pretty much kicked ass.
  • I'm surprised Toy Story hasn't yet become a Saturday morning cartoon. There are still a ton of stories to be milked out of that franchise.
  • We are one week in to our first foster care placement and so far KVC has not impressed us. (We actually go through Christian Heritage, which in turn goes through KVC. Christian Heritage has been fine.) We were warned about KVC so at least we weren't blindsided by their early flaws. The biggest errors involve lack of communication and flawed or incomplete information. I'm already thinking about taking some ideas to somebody in the Unicameral.
  • Go get half-price smoothies at Juice Stop.

Movie Blasphemy.

Silly, Caddyshack is not one of those movies you can only watch one time. It gets better with repeated viewings - just as great films like Fletch, Animal House, and Blues Brothers have before it.

It *may* also help not to wait 30 or so years after the release of a movie to watch it. It’s entirely possible that no movie can live up to 30 years of hype.

At any rate, I’d keep playing - I don’t think the heavy stuff is going to come down for quite a while!

CaddyShack is one of the most quotable movies ever.  A true classic.

“Cinderella boy. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper now about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac… It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!”

“Last time a saw a mouth like that it had a hook in it!”

“Hey baby, you must’ve been something before electricity.”

“I hear this place is restricted, Wang, so don’t tell ‘em you’re Jewish, okay?”

“You’re rather attractive for a beautiful girl with a great body.”

(After caddying for the Dalai Lama) “Oh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.”  So I got that going for me, which is nice.”

How many men can play a round of golf without uttering, “Your honor, your honor.”

I saw it again a year or so ago. It does seem dated, but I was shocked at how many lines I could still recite, and how many of them make their way into my conversations to this day.

“Caddyshack” is very much a nostalgia film nowadays. If you didn’t see it back in the day, that emotional connection (to the actors, characters, or overall zeitgeist) just won’t be there for you. Hence, this explains your lack of appreciation for it.

“Mrs. Crane, I’m looking at you, you wore green so you could hide.”

Oh, and please tell me you’ve at least seen the movie “Fletch.”

Chevy Chase was good but he never made me want to be Fletch.  In the books he was one of the coolest characters ever and I wanted to be just like him.
