Mine is Faster Than Yours

May 15, 2008 at 11:09am By: Mr. Wilson Posted in The Lincolnite Blog

Let’s compare internet connection speeds so we can help each other comparison shop. Here’s how we’ll do it:

  1. Avoid any bandwidth-hogging activities, such as file sharing
  2. Go to SpeedTest.net
  3. Click the pyramid associated with Kansas City, MO to start the test
  4. Record the download and upload speeds. If you run the test more than once, record the fastest speeds
  5. In the comments, note your ISP; your service plan and monthly cost; your download speed; and your upload speed

How does your speed compare to others in Lincoln and Nebraska?

7 Mbps plan, 3.6 tested?  You’re getting shafted.

What’s your total TWC bill?

I pay $98 per month for Windstream.  That includes a 6 Mbps connection that is consistently in the 5.6 to 5.9 range and 384 up.

Having visited their website to figure out what plan they have, I noticed that they now offer 10 down 1 up for $49,90 a month so I may have to switch to that plan.  And for those who don’t know, Internet Nebraska just piggybacks off of Time Warner’s network. I even pay my bill to the cable company.

Funny you should mention that. This post actually began as sort of an “I’m thinking about switching to Internet Nebraska...” post.

I, too, am shocked that you’re getting 6.9 Mbps on a 7 Mbps plan. The advertised and actual speeds are very rarely that close.

These just-tested figures are in the same ballpark as all of the speed tests I’ve run in the last year or so.

Except for the price, I have no complaints about Road Runner

Note:  My first modem was 800 baud…

That is in the middle of the day while peeps are using it, at night it jumps.  It is pretty awesome.

I really do not notice it feeling faster except for large file up and downloads.

Me and my bit torrent client want to stop by to, umm, visit you at work.

Just go ahead and leave the backdoor unlocked when you leave tonight.

torrented fedora 9 DVD (3.3gb) yesterday and it took about 20 minutes.

Seriously I would poop myself if my internets were that fast.

I usually get in 6k range during the evening.  I assume they must rate-limit during business hours.

Pawky Argus says Many things affect the speed May 15, 2008 at 1:19pm

Many things affect the speed of your internet connection.

See: http://tinyurl.com/63xvfh

But, since that info is provided by TWC, it’s kind of like asking President Bush or General Petraeus how the surge is working…

Anyhow, your computer, your network, your software, your house wiring, how many splitters you have added to your cable TV, etc. can all affect your speed.

TWC can remotely check the status of your modem and related signal parameters.  I’d bet they’d be happy to do it too.  In Lincoln: 421-0300.

I can also test I2 to KC - different routing of course, but I got 57.9 Mbps.
I’ll check Windstream from home later tonight.

This is perfect timing. I just left TWC and went to Windstream today (dear lord, what an ordeal that turned out to be). Sadly, I can’t seem to get the test to work. I’ve tried 2 browsers, and hunted for KC (can’t see a KC pyramid). I must be an idiot (Neal, don’t go there...).

beerorkid says RE: This is perfect timing. I May 15, 2008 at 4:16pm

it is a bit down and to the right of the yellow one.

a pic of it if you need, with a horribly drawn arrow wink

Fletch says RE: This is perfect timing. I May 15, 2008 at 7:44pm

Thanks. If I had seen that map, I could have found KC. I can’t see or find a way to the page with the map and all the pyramids. Go figure. This has been a day from hell since making the switcheroo.
