Middle of the Road

I've made three trips to Omaha in the past three days. Why do drivers insist on camping in the center lane on the 3-lane portions of I-80?

I’m usually doing at least 80 in the center lane.

I think it’s a natural reaction.  More open space on both sides feels safer or something like that.

Define ‘camping’. Right is for under-speed limit traffic, merging and slowing to exit, left for passing and center for through traffic, which shouldn’t be going under the limit. If there’s an open lane, any delay caused by a driver going slower than you want to go is negated.

I like the middle lane much for the same reasons as MattF. I’m definitely travelling at or slight above the speed limit. It lets me stay in one place and get around the slowpokes on the right, yet remain out of the way of the people that are truly speeding on the left of me. One lane is too slow. One lane is too fast. One lane is just right. Seems like no matter your driving preference, there’s a lane for you. This is one of those blog posts that truly puzzles me. I’d like to see three lanes everywhere. LOL

for sure.  It is the warm blanket of paved transportation thingies.

And the Lincoln south beltway will follow shortly thereafter.

I ‘camp out’ in the center lane, but am rarely going at or less than the speed limit.  Staying there gives me the most flexibility for passing.

I camp there because so many people choose to use the left lane as a cruising lane. The right lane isn’t a good cruising lane, as Matt F. points out.

That’s a great line!

Well, here’s how I see it.  The center lane is the cruising lane, similar to the right lane on 2-lane highways.  The left lane is for passing the slower ones in the cruiser lane.  The right lane is for people who 1) are going to exit soon   or 2) are going reeeeeally slow.
