LJS Editors Hop on the Snow Wagon

By: Mr. Wilson on February 11, 2008
The LJS editors have hopped on board the movement to change Lincoln's snow removal policies. Mayor Beutler has expressed interest in reviewing the city's policies as well. Then again, Mayor Beutler has also promised to review overall city spending -- with methods including an upcoming citizen survey of some sort -- so if the snow budget goes up, something else is probably going to have to go down. The Mayor is under a lot of pressure to keep the budget in check. And there's the rub. Is snow removal a service Lincolnites are willing to pay (more) for? I think it probably is ... right up until the new tax bills arrive. That's when folks tend to get cranky. I wonder what we could accomplish with the equivalent of, say, a buck a person?

You had me at ‘citizen survey’... 😉

The LJS editorials have been complete disasters lately, and this one is no exception.  The most ridiculous assertion is this: “Residents have a right to the government services they want to pay for”.

Say what? I think they’d disagree if we wanted to pay for the electrocution of convicted first degree murderers.

I don’t think so. Snow removal serves as an appropriate punishment for the actions of snowflakes and deters future snowflakes from committing similar offenses. I refuse to let the high tax dollars I pay go towards letting snowflakes “lounge around” and get college degrees while the rest of us have to work for a living! It’s wrong! Also, the families of those that have been snowed upon need to have a sense of closure that ONLY snow removal provides.

Studies show that white snowflakes are disproportionately targeted by snowplows. I can’t support a racist snow-removal policy.

The best part about snow is all the ridiculous letters to the editor complaining about snow removal.

It seems that folks expectations are a bit too high.  Even if we doubled the current efforts the streets would not magically be cleared instantly.

I drive a honda that is only a few inches off the ground and get stuck every now and then, but I still think the crews are doing a heckuva job.

And Dave don’t worry, your tax money is still being used to kill innocent dark skinned people.

And Dave don’t worry…

Huh uh. We aren’t going there, folks. bork, consider your hand slapped; Dave (and everybody else), this is your preemptive warning against any follow-up.

Back to snowplowing… I do think the policy needs to be looked at. There were times in December when my street and neighborhood were dangerous to drive or walk on due to ice, ruts, etc., yet I never saw a plow or blade.

Last week, they cleared my street (I live on a circle, not a busy road) three times. The first time by a road grader that did a decent job, but did poorly at the round end of the circle. Many hours later, while the street itself was bare, dry pavement, two tractors with blades came through, and did a better job of cleaning it all the way to the curbs and in the round part of the circle. However, the street was bare and dry and more than passable before they got here. I guess I understood it.

However, a few hours later, when the street was clear from curb to curb, and it was dry, and the remnants from the first two tractors were melting nicely in the sun, two more tractors cleaned the street. Well, they really just scraped the cement and left scratches up and down a dry, bare, sunlit street. That seems like wasted time and money. Could have used one of those passes in December.

So, I would say there are improvements to be made.

I bet they kept plowing your circle cuz someone on your block wrote a letter to the editor.

I think that the snow and the snowplows need to come up with a compromise together before Phil Erdman comes up with a “solution that doesn’t make sense for anyone.”

Except for maybe the “normalcy” of the winter this year.  (And the ease at which people can bi#%@ and moan.)  The street crews, in my opinion, are doing the same fine job they’ve done for the last 25 years.  Well, except for last New Years Eve…that was bad.
