Little Ditty ‘Bout Jack and Deena

Deena Winter is clearly not a big Haymarket Arena fan; Jack Mitchell is. So when Deena Winter writes a negative-toned article you can be sure that Jack Mitchell will be close behind with a rebuttal. Whichever side you’re on, hopefully you agree that the banter between two relatively prominent local media figures is a good thing.

I will admit, her recent articles have soured my thinking that she’s one of the best things about the LJS. I’m glad Jack is vocal, and I thought his rebuttal on the blog was well written.

Good rebuttal by Jack. Can’t really take Deena seriously after her absurdist piece about North Dakota’s tundra versus our balmy weather.

Bingo.

That’s where I think the wheels fell off for me, as well. I also think her arena columns have had more opinion sprinkled through them than her normal pieces.

If I want opinion under the guise of an actual column, I’ll stick with Don Walton. Of course, that’s right on my list after having a root canal.

It’s opinion.

I feel like I need to respond to myself so I don’t come off like I’m one of my own pet peeves, that being when people act like inaccuracies don’t matter if they’re found in opinion content.

Opinion or not, Deena Winter has a responsibility to present her facts accurately or risk losing credibility. I’m guessing that’s what Fletch is trying to say, but instead he said “opinion under the guise of an actual column,” and that prompted my pithy sass. Sorry, Fletch.

I was under the impression that she covered city hall, not that she was an opinion columnist.

I thought Cindy Lange-Kubick was a columnist. I thought that Deena, like the folks that cover the rotunda, are reporters. Aren’t they two different things?

As far as presenting her facts accurately, in this instance, I think that Jack from KLIN provided many more facts, and did it much more accurately.

She does cover city hall as a reporter, but she—like Don Walton and like the Legislature reporters—has a column as well. I believe hers runs on Wednesdays.

Neal, I will say this. I don’t typically find myself agreeing with your viewpoint, but I do have give you props for sticking up for the LJS and its people from time to time.
