Lincoln’s Near South Neighborhood

By: Mr. Wilson on September 4, 2012
Over at Notes From a Small Place, Jake Meador has a nice piece on the Near South. An excerpt:
Outside of the inner city core, which is 1st to 27th east/west and South to Holdrege north/south, you won’t often find Lincolnites speaking in any kind of demeaning tone about a neighborhood. You live in Uni, I live in Meadowlane, she lives at 84th and Van Dorn… whatever. You won’t find much difference between the residents or much friction between neighborhoods. Lincoln’s inner city – if you can even describe where I live as “inner city” – is the one part of the city that other Lincolnites do look at along the bridge of their nose, if you follow. Our Russ’s Market, one of the local grocery store chains, is the “ghetto Russ’s.” Recently when I mentioned to a friend that Joie and I were getting rid of some stuff and if they wanted it they could come take it off our curb, they said, “Well, I bet things don’t stay on the curb long in that neighborhood.” A few years back the local paper did a series of stories on us that referred to our neighborhood as “the core,” which didn’t help matters.
