Kudos to Tuffy’s

By: Mr. T on September 4, 2007
I have previously noted a few outstanding auto repair outfits here in town I have had experiences with, such as Economy and Performance in downtown and also Fayad's, both of which seem to operate largely on good word of mouth. Add to that list Rick Hein and the Tuffy Auto Service Center on 14th and Pine Lake Road. After some punks let the air out of my car tire on Saturday morning, I took it over to the Tuffy's - which just happened to be both open on Saturday and the closest repair shop to where I was. Within minutes of my arrival, Rick took the time to remove and inspect the tire thoroughly, put it back on, and had me on my way shortly thereafter, without any charges. Kudos to Rick and Tuffy's.

Glad you posted that Mr. T, I have a tire with a slow leak and I’ll just drive it over to Tuffy’s to have it repaired.

I love Tuffy’s, and Rick was always very good to work with. No complaints at all!

Good to hear that you’ve had good experiences with Rick as well. Its really unfortunate that whenever one mentions “auto repair” the first impulse that comes to mind is dread at the thought of being shafted by some conniving jerk.

Since I have lived in Lincoln, I have to say that I have encountered a number of high quality, reliable auto repair places here in town. Folks like Kevin Gilbert (Economy and Performance), Mike Fayad (Fayad’s), and Rick Hein seem to be true professionals who value great customer service and honesty over the almighty dollar.

Any suggestions for auto repair in east Lincoln?  I also hate having car work done, and have yet to find someone I trust (I’ve gone to Russwood, and they seem to do good work, but as with most dealers they charge an arm and a leg.)

I have been happy with Olstens on 33rd and Leighton in the past.  Last time I think they got me with an engine cleaning and I was surprised at the cost.  They have called out my forgetfullness and could of profited off of it, but did not.  Still that is east to me, prob not you.

I am looking forward to using Economy and Performance from the good reviews here.  I tried once but was in too big of a hurry.  They must be good since they are so busy.

oh I agreed to the engine cleaning to clarify.

And I learned about E&P from this site.

I have started using AutoWorks at 49th and Rentworth. I love that place - clean, they explain stuff to me, shuttle me to my home, etc. It’s my new place of choice, even though I gave a good shout-out to Tuffy’s above.

Eastside - I have had very good experiences with Fayad’s, also on 49th and Rentworth and quite close to AutoWorks. It is (or at least was last time I was there) a one man operation, and Mike works with you to explain the problems and options you have with your car. If I lived in that area I would probably use him exclusively.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that there is no big ad in the phonebook, he truly does operate almost exclusively by word of mouth and seems to have a lot of business among loyal customers.

I cannot recommend Lincoln Auto Service highly enough!

I was referred to them by a long time Lincoln native when I moved here a few years ago, and have had my fair share of car problems since. Every single time they have worked me into the schedule the following day and I’ve never dealt with a more friendly and professional mechanic. They even treat my wife equally when she has gone in alone - which is saying a lot. Many auto related services do not seem to respect women, or try to take advantage of them.

My most recent issue was a beautiful example. I was having an electrical problem. They called me later that afternoon and said it looked like it was going to cost about $900 to fix it, but they had one more avenue they could check out. If I could bear with them and let them check something else in the morning, there was an off chance it could be something much easier to fix. Turns out it was - my bill came to about $150, and they were apologizing to ME for it taking 2 days to fix! I assured them it was no big deal. 😊

Another plus - they have never once tried to “upsell” me. In fact, they often give the choice between OEM parts or checking a salvage yard for a refurbished or used part.

Anyway - there are very, very few businesses I would personally encourage you to use - they are at the top of the list.

I used to deliver auto parts and got to know a lot of the mechanics and shops in Lincoln. I’m happy to say there are several I would recommend.

Economy and Performance-Kevin’s a great guy.
Kelly’s Auto Repair-47th and Pierce Dr. Kelly’s a great guy and happy to explain everything.
Trade Center Automotive-Near 56th and HWY 2 across from Adventure golf way in the back. James Waltke might be the nicest mechanic in Lincoln.
Autoworks is a good choice for all the reasons Fletch gave.
Olsten’s-I’ve heard great things about them right along with Blum’s not very far away.
A & D- Been there once, good place in Havelock.
Baldwin’s-I think a BIT more expensive, but Randy Baldwin is good people.
George Witt Auto Service-Good Honda repair people. Clean shop, nice guys.
Norm’s Conoco-40th and Normal, been there forever. They still pump your gas here.
Automotive Service-17th and Adams. Jon Johnson is awesome. Super nice guy and always busy.

All of those people would be a good bet. They treat customers with courtesy and respect.

Are the major dealership’s service departments ripoffs (in that do they charge a lot more)? I’ve continued to have my vehicle serviced at DuTeau’s even now that it’s off warranty. I feel like they’re very up front with me and the service has been great. But am I over paying compared with a small, private repair shop?

Meatball, it’s hard to make a blanket statement, but I would guess “yes.” LOL

Thanks for the tips guys. I had never even heard of a lot of those places. Even though I am a loyal Economy and Performance customer most of the time, I’ve decided to try Lincoln Auto service one of these days. Looks like they are only a few blocks from where I live!
