Please stop reading the comments on articles over at JournalStar.com. You know how it causes your brain to seize up, and the frustration, anger, confusion, and complete loss of hope for the future of humanity you experience while reading the comments only puts you in a sour mood. And don't get yourself started thinking about all of the spelling and grammar errors!
Instead of torturing yourself by reading the comments, how about doing something more productive with your time? Possibilities include:
- Smash your head against the basement wall to create holes for the egress windows you plan to install
- Count the number of hairs on Daisy the Wonder Schnoodle's back
- Eat gravel
- Engage in omphaloskepsis
Please, Self. I beg you.

Mr. W, I couldn’t have said it better myself. I don’t know why, but something sucks me in to reading the comments once every few days. Mostly because I see a story, and I know what the reaction of stupid people will be, so I read to see if I am right. I even go crazy reading the comments on the Biz Buzz. I do so, and feel like a small piece of my brain dies. Then I weep for our future for a few minutes, and move on with my day.
Comments on the LJS took a turn for the worse during the Arena debate and haven’t improved much since then. I remember the phrases “Socialist,” “Marxist,” “Fascist,” “Communist,” and my personal favorite, “Boondoggle,” being thrown about.

Turn for the worse? Have LJS comments ever been a high-quality, informative discourse? I remember when they enabled that feature and almost immediately it started going downhill.
Having said that, I would say that the overall standard for LJS comments is still pretty good compared to other forums. For example, youtube commenters make LJS commenters look like atomic physicists.
I’d always assumed that only about a quarter of all LJS comments are genuine sentiments. The remainder has to be something like 40% recreational anglers, 15% certifiable lunatics, and 20% paid lobbyists, astroturfers, and LJS shills.
I’m not sure if that’s the conclusion of the cynic or the optimist in me, but this fish doesn’t have a hard time cruising on by those murky waters.
