Iraq War Rally?

By: Mr. Wilson on February 27, 2007
There appeared to be some sort of march/rally associated with the Iraq War downtown today. It looked like many of the participants were Iraqi. Participants carried flags (American, Iraqi) and banners, but I couldn't ever get a good look at the writing on the banners. Anybody know what it was all about?

If it was a pro-war rally, we’ll be guessing forever.  If it was an anti-war rally, it will be on the LJS frontpage tomorrow.

For the record, they’ve done a pretty good job of not covering the *weekly* anti-war rallies on the O St./Centennial Mall intersection the past couple of years.  When Mr. Wilson posted this note, my first thought was “Wait, it’s not Wednesday afternoon…”.

Making the front page of a newspaper is almost entirely a function of the size of the rally (didn’t we have a big-ass immigration rally a year or two ago?) and the extremity of the organizer’s political views (whenever the KKK/neo-Nazis come to town).

A quick search of this date only brings the formal end of the Gulf War and the declaration of Western Sahara’s independence (it’s been occupied by Morocco for 31 years).

Weekly, huh? As much as I walk around Downtown over the noon hour, you’d think I would have seen more of ‘em. Guess I need to stop staring at my feet while I walk.

Oops, I should have narrowed that down to “Wednesday evening rush hours”.  I can’t say for sure if they’re still doing that, but I know for a long time I’d see them on those rare occasions I drove my car after work on Wednesdays.

Mystery solved (on the front page of the Local section, natch)

I thought I had heard of all the ethnic/religious combinations in Iraq, but the Yazidi are new to me.  Given Lincoln’s “Middle of Everywhere” status w/r/t refugees, I’m not surprised that the largest Yazidi community in the U.S. is here in Lincoln.

Dave, I’m curious. Do you go to the pro-war rallies? When are they?

I only ask because I would assume that if Dave knows the Journal Star wouldn’t cover these pro-war rallies, they’re surely happening somewhere, right?

Oh wait, these people want the US to stay in Iraq? So they’re against the troop withdrawal? Surely this must be a typo, for this story is in the Journal Star!
