I used to spend quite a bit of time at the Centrum and Atrium when I was a kid. They used to be filled with shops and restaurants. And then, seemingly overnight, they just ... emptied out.
That's a kid's eye view of the situation so it's pretty simplified. These days the Centrum is known as the Energy Square Building, but in the not-too-distant future it'll entirely belong to Southeast Community College.
SCC, you may know, already owned the first floor. Now they own the second floor as well. That's good news both for Downtown Lincoln -- which will enjoy the dollars that students bring with them -- and for SCC. SCC is doing some fantastic things with post-secondary and continuing education, and at very affordable prices. Well, relative to some of those other educational institutions in town, anyway.
Anyway, congratulations to SCC for their expansion.

I never liked the name Centrum and now, many years later, I can’t shake that name. It’d be fun if SCC acknowledged the building’s history and called it “centrum campus” or “SCC at the Centrum” or something.
I used to hit the Centrum in college. Had a decent food court, as did The Atrium. The Centrum was actually home to Thingsville, a GNC, and a Waldenbooks, among other stores.
Ahh yes, Waldenbooks. I used to shop for my Garfield and Calvin & Hobbes books there.
I’ve always thought the same thing, that they just disappeared in the night. I seldom traverse those skywalks nowadays, but I understand the Burrito Shack has a location in there. Never actually seen it, but I liked the Burrito Shack in its short-lived presence on 9th Street.
