I Don’t Know What a Bodega Is, But it Sounds Cool

July 23, 2008 at 8:15pm By: Mr. Wilson Posted in The Lincolnite Blog

I doubt you’ll see me doing my weekly shopping there, but it’s cool to see a new grocery store in the Haymarket. Rojo’s Goods, located next to Old Chicago, focuses on the staples, but will almost surely evolve as it strives to meet the wants and needs of the Downtown residents who are most likely to shop there. Congratulations to owner Tissy McMahan as well as the mysterious other owner(s) the Journal Star didn’t name in their article and Mary Beth Kos!

It will be interesting to see how successful they will be. I have 2 small grocery stores within convenient walking distance of where I am, but for me they function more as places to go to if I forgot something at a larger grocery store, and not as my primary source for groceries. I doubt I have ever spent more than $5 at these stores in one visit, though I do end up at them frequently.

Regardless, good luck to the owners of Rojo’s!

I work with a guy who is good friends with the owners.  I went down there over lunch to take pics for a post and did not mention who I was.  My friend at work asked me if I could build them a site.  He called her and said “it was the guy who came in taking pictures’.

So I just got started building it today and it hits the LJS and lists the site.

I scrambled to get a bit of content up, but it is far from being done.

Just strange how things work sometimes.

1) Small unincorporated town in California.

2) Convenience store, as known in some cities such as Boston and New York.

Or, Bodequita, a general store in Latin America.

More brain wrinkles for Mr. W.

There’s no mystery about the co-owner of the store; it says it right there in the story:
McMahan is billing the store, which is co-owned by Mary Beth Kos, as a “bodega,” a Spanish word that means a small market or grocery store.

Hmm, I’m pretty sure that wasn’t there last night when I wrote the post. Or maybe I was hallucinating.

Matt, nice to see you posting here. I love your blog - it’s a daily must-read for me (after I hit Lincolnite, of course).
