How Deep?

By: Mr. Wilson on February 22, 2007
Weather forecasters are predicting a big storm for this weekend. How big? Well, they aren't really saying. That's the thing about weather geeks; they'll hype up big weather events ("It's coming! It's coming!"), but when you ask them to be specific, they suddenly get shy. And when all the hype fizzles, we let them off the hook by letting them blame a butterfly in Sumatra. Even though Ken Siemek won't clue us in, that doesn't mean we can't fire off some wild guesses of our own. What do you think this weekend's "weather event" will look like? Will we get a massive blizzard? Just rain? Maybe a nice ice storm? (We haven't had a really good one of those in ages, it seems.) I'm going to call for 5.5 inches of back-breaking wet stuff. You know, the kind of snow that's great for snowballs and chiropractors. The kind that really makes me wish I had a snowblower. I also think we'll see some light flooding in places where ice jams are a problem, but nothing major. What's your guess?

I say anywhere between 1 and 12 inches.  Dang, I should be a meteorologist.  Actually, I went to school for it, and my wife is one, so I know how hard snow is to predict.  But still…

I’m going to say an inch and no more.  I’m calling BS on all the “OMG SN0W! TERRARS!!” for this weekend.

I am a sad panda :(

I hope it is not much, or it melts quick like.  gotz me a for fun bike race this sat which will prob be purdy moist.  And still healing from the broken collarbones so all this ice and snow is scaring me from riding outdoors.

Plus my neighbors never go the extra 20 feet with their snowblowers on either side.

Oh well the doggies love the snow.  And Nothing can compare to the joy I get from reading letters to the editor about snow removal 😉

Not all doggies love the snow.  My wiener dog has a little trouble with dragging if it is more than a couple of inches.

I guess I am lucky.  In my neighborhood the first out with the snow blower does the whole block.

Wow, this storm has made its way to the front page of the Journal Star’s website.  I hope it just rains, but if it’s going to snow I’d like to see over 10 inches.  These 4-6-inch snowfalls don’t do anything but cause accidents and make your car dirty a few days later.  I want something that’s actually cool to watch and see, and that usually takes over 10 inches.  So either 0 or 10+ for me.

I’m going to go with the meteorologists and say “signifigant.” 😉 I have a snowblower, which was one of the first things I bought when I moved into my house with the long driveway. Although I don’t see anyone like this in my immediate vicinity, I’m going to try to keep an eye out for the older folks in our city scooping the heavy stuff. I don’t want to be the guy that lived down the street from someone who had a heart attack while scooping the snow.
