Home Comfort

By: Mr. Wilson on November 14, 2007
I'm curious at what temperature Lincolnites tend to keep their houses, especially as we enter a new season. Here at 625 Elm Street we've been keeping the thermostat at 68 during the day -- The Missus and I are both home during the day, remember -- but on sunny days the house stays above 70 thanks to some southern windows. At night the thermostat drops to 65. Last year we kept the house warmer because of Robbie, but I've hardly noticed the change this year. I know The Missus feels it more than I do, and occasionally she'll "cheat" and bump up the temperature. Are we in the normal range among Lincolnites? At what temperature do you keep your home?

In the summer 75ish, in the winter 67 at night and 70 during the day unless there is sun exposure.

usually at night we only set it around 62 or 63 (it’s analog, so it’s hard to tell exactly). Usually during the day we leave it where it is, but sometimes if it feels to cold we bump it up to 65 or 66 for the pets sake.

70 during the day, 68 or so at night, in the winter.

I’d highly recommend a programmable thermostat.  We have one and it works great.  It has four times you can set, so it goes down to 62 at 11 p.m., kicks up to 68 at 5:30 a.m., goes back down to 62 until 4:30 p.m., and then up to 69 for the evening until 10.  Definitely worth the $40.  Not only saves you money, but it is without hassle.

We keep ours at 67 while we’re in the house and 64 when we’re gone. I noticed today that LES recommends dropping the temperature to 60 when you are gone, so I will re-program it to 60 while we’re gone.

Set at 67 it is a little cool when you are inactive, but I’d rather throw on a sweater than pay Aquila any more than we already are.

Last winter, it was 62 almost all winter long. This year, we have one of those programmable dealies so we might make it a tad warmer during the day. Depends on how much gas bills are.

In the summer, we kept it near 78.

Haven’t turned on heater on yet but we keep it around 62 sometimes my wife will cheat and bump it up to 64.  We have lots of blankets in our house and we like the cold anyway.

We have one of the programmable ones and we have it at 60 from 10 pm until 5 AM.  65 until 8 AM then back down to 60 until we get home and then back up to 65.  The only fights we have had in our entire marriage have been over the thermostat.  I don’t know if any of you remember back in ‘93 or ‘94 there was a murder here in town.  Two ladies sharing an apartment and one killed the other over the temperature of the thermostat.  My wife looked right at me when the story came on the news and said, “IT COULD HAPPEN”.

I program mine to be 60 from 2300 to 0530 then up to 65 until 0730 when it goes back to 58 until 1700 where it stays at 65 until 2300.  When I’m out of town for a week as I am at least once a month I set it at 55.

59 at night and during the day (no one’s home). Until it gets seriously cold (below 10), the furnace rarely runs at night and we prefer to sleep with lots of blankets. When we’re home, it’s usually at 67, but I could live with 65 most of the time. Sometimes the wife bumps it up or down. We’re having our first child in April, so I’m guessing the temp will change some. We have one of the automatic thermostats.

Wow, it looks like mine’s set higher than anyone else’s. I should mention that if we were gone all day, I’d turn it down, but someone is home all the time, so we drop it at night. It’s hard to get a good handle on the nighttime temperature, cause I have a two-story house with one heating/colling unit. I won’t make that mistake again.

I really miss the days when I lived in old apartments in the Near South where the heat came from the radiator and I kept my windows open all winter just to keep the temp below 80.
