Great News at NW 48th and I-80

By: Mr. Wilson on January 14, 2008
I was happy to see the news this weekend that a commercial and industrial area is planned for the northwest corner of NW 48th and I-80. It's an area that, to me, has seemed ready for development for a long time. My only concern is NW 48th Street itself. Is the road still just a narrow two-lane with no shoulders? That's no good for a road serving an industrial area. I've got to think that the road will need some improvements before too much more development occurs in that part of town.

Yes, it still is a narrow 2-lane with no shoulders. Worse yet, with the needed addition of the grocery store, there is a big need for a light at NW 48th and W. Huntington. (Not bad knowledge for a dude from the ‘burbs of SE Lincoln, eh?)

Speaking of grocery stores, why doesn’t Doug Emery complain about this development because there are no grocery stores in Air Park?

Dave, Dave, Dave. Rule #1 in snarky commenting is always make sure you’ve got your facts straight. (I speak from experience.) Unless the situation has changed since May, there is a grocery store in Air Park.

My bad.  I must have missed when an IGA became a store that people actually go to.

It would be a store that people go to when they’ve needed one for years. I was going to bring that issue up on the blog last week, but I figured we’d beaten that dead horse enough.

Back to NW 48th - one of the problems with that road is that when you first jump on to it from O or I-80, the speed limit is 55 MPH, and many don’t seem to slow down up there at all once they hid the residential stretch. With the new grocery and Subway and other stuff there, there’s a lot of cross traffic and turning vehicles. Think how often you hear that road mentioned on the accidents they read off on KLIN in the mornings. A light or two would help, and I would think for now W. Huntington makes the most sense.

Yep, you’d have to improve Northwest 48th north of the I-80 crossing. They’d need turn lanes in the center and on the shoulder side as well. The speed limit north from Shoemakers Truck Stop is 50 MPH then 45 around the IGA store.  I work in Emerald, I go through the Shoemakers intersection a minimum of twice a day.

I’d love to see development there, but I just hope it doesn’t turn into the mess down at West Denton Road.
