Good Morning, My Little Guinea Pigs

By: Mr. Wilson on December 3, 2007
Y'all are guinea pigs. I hope you don't mind. You might have already noticed a new "Reply to this comment" link accompanying each of the comments on this site. I went ahead and enabled threaded commenting (as I hinted I might). I don't know if I'll keep it around or not. If I do keep it around, you can count on some formatting and usability changes. What I would like from you, if you're so inclined, is to give it a test drive. If you happen to notice any glitches or see any error messages, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). If you can grab a screenshot of the glitch, even better. Happy commenting!

See what your friends and neighbors have to say about this.

So what do people think of this?

Well, I click, and it expands to allow for a comment. My saved info is still populating the field for name and email. Now we’ll click Submit!

Hmm…I think it titles the thread with the first few words typed instead of the Title….*click* and see…

Is that a preview feature, then? I wonder if I title it something different if it over-rides that.

No title, it takes the titling from the typed text. Title, then it uses the title. Neat.

Yep, that’s how it works, CS. For now anyway. If the user enters a title, then that’s what gets used. Otherwise it uses the first five words of the comment.

While I was testing I sometimes had it automatically title the post “RE: Previous comment’s title”. So this comment, for example, would have had the default title of “RE: Yep.”.

I like the idea of the auto “RE: Yep” titling.

OMG, I am so confused now. Where will my retorts go?

I would like to retort

I like berry tarts 😉

negative nelly here:  It is hard to find the new replies, which makes it a bit confusing.  Not saying you don’t get bunches of replies, but it might be better on very populated boards.

Positive Polly:  I can’t wait to see one of them mega battles between two regular commentors (yoooos knows whos I talk about) in one mega box 😉
And it is darn cool to have the option to reply to a specific thread.

Actually, beerorkid, there is a flag for comments you’ve viewed versus those you haven’t. If you take a peek at the source code (if you’re into that sort of thing) you’ll see that each comment has a class of either “viewed” or “not_viewed”. I just haven’t done any sort of special styling to differentiate between the two. If I stick with threaded comments, I will make sure it’s easy to tell what you’ve seen and what you haven’t.

I loves me the crtl U   and your site is so clean it bewilders me 😉

OK, boys and girls. Comments you haven’t seen yet will now have a yellow (or yellowish) background. It’s not the most attractive thing in the world, but hey, this is all temporary until I decide if we’re keeping these threaded comments.

I may have found a bug ...  if you preview a post, regardless of where you were replying, it puts your post at the end.  This post will test that (replying to Fletch’s OMG, I am so confused).

Who knows, maybe it’s supposed to work like that.

Nice catch, Dave. Thanks for reporting it.
