Friday Five

Five things Lincoln can do to begin moving up from sixtieth place:
  1. Ditch the "we're Omaha's kid brother" mentality
  2. Make economic investment in the community easier;
  3. Actively promote and support local entrepreneurship;
  4. Build feelings of ownership and responsibility for local (neighborhood) parks and other public goods;
  5. Improve civic engagement and increase ownership of public decisions.
Those are just a start. What's on your list?

* Nurture existing businesses or recuit new businesses to replace jobs for the ones leaving Lincoln (Alltel, Pfizer, Goodyear, Gallup).
* Improve public transportation
* Improve planning
—-Does Lincoln really need a high rise downtown?
—-Does the Lancaster County Event center really need to expand if the city is considering a new arena?
—-Why is the city ripping out the bricks and landscaping at 11th and Lincoln Mall to work on the water main?  Should the water main work have taken place before the finish work took place?

I’m not completely certain of the timing, but the water main work is associated with the flooding at the City/County Building a while back. If memory serves, the new landscaping either had already been put in, or was in the process of being put in, at the time of the leak.

Ah, that was never made clear.  That makes perfect sense.  Yeah, the landscaping was done for quite some time before the City sprung a leak.
