Friday Five

By: Mr. Wilson on April 21, 2006
Five Lincoln restaurants I miss:
  1. King's
A chili cheese dog and chocolate shake (with the tin!) sounds mighty tasty right now.
  2. Jabrisco
    Black and white soup, anyone?
  3. Rock 'n' Roll Runza
I miss the original RnRR, not that crappy fast food version.
  4. Eighth Street Iron Works
I only got there once, mere days before it closed, but the experience was memorable. Anybody have their meatloaf recipe?
  5. Jax
The Missus and I went to Jax for many of our "formal" dates.

I mourn the loss of “Jax Shack” as well.  Heck, I even miss it’s geographical heir, “Bob’s Gridiron Grill”

This post is biased. It does not include Greasy Sam’s.

What?! Biased? Baloney. This post is certified 100% Fair and Balanced™.

I’ll probably regret asking this, but what the heck is Greasy Sam’s?

It was on N 48th, a little bit north of Vine if I remember right. It might have just been called Sam’s…I’m thinking maybe the “greasy” was an unofficial affectionate addition.

It was so cheap and so good…their specialty was the Big Samson, which was like 2 patties and well topped, and I think it was only 95 cents. The last time I remember going there would have been in 94 or 95…I think it closed right around then.

Oh yeah, I remember that place. I think it was just called Sam’s, and it had an all-American theme to it, didn’t it? I never ate there. I remember them advertising really cheap burgers. In fact, one time I was in the car with my dad and I asked him how their burgers could be so cheap. (There was a sign advertising $.29 burgers or something like that.) His answer? “You get what you pay for.”

I’m not sure if Sam’s was the same as Greasy Sam’s, but thank God someone else remembers that place.  I was starting to worry that I was having massive childhood memory hallucinations.  Sam’s was an all-American food place that served hamburgers and hot dogs.  There was one at 48th and Leighton (roughly where the DQ is now) and I do believe that there used to be one somewhere south of the capital, but it’s exact location I don’t recall.  Cut me some slack, I was six at the time.

I really liked Stackwoods. (what is now Lazlo’s 2nd location)

Their cornbread was awesome. Too bad it was horrible mismanaged (or so I heard)

I’m gonna add Jerusalem Cafe to the list just because I love that place and used to go all the time for lunch, but when I drove past yesterday I noticed it was gone.  Bugger.
