Four Wins for Lincoln?

By: Mr. Wilson on May 16, 2006
Lincoln could find itself with as many as four State Champion soccer teams this week. In Class B action tonight, the Pius X boys and girls both take on Omaha Skutt. In Class A action tomorrow night, the East girls face Millard North, while the East boys will face Millard South for the 3rd time this season (having won 5-0 and 3-2 in prior meetings). Congratulations, Pius and East, and good luck!

Pius and Skutt split last night, but probably not in the way most people expected, with the Pius girls losing and the Pius boys winning.

I was shocked by how complacent the Pius girls were.  They seemed to be happy with Skutt possessing the ball and doing whatever they wanted with it.  You could tell they had a lot of talent and skill on their team (as did Skutt), but they didn’t use it right.  Nonetheless, it was a good game.  But I’d like to see a replay of the Pius goal that was called back because of ‘offsides’.

The Pius boys played an excellent first half, but came out during the second half completely dead.  They are lucky they didn’t get 2-3 goals scored on them in the first 20-25 minutes of the second half.  Zuerlein’s goal was spectacular and appeared to have energized them, as their play over the next 11 minutes was as good as it was in the first half.

As for the officiating, I’ve never been a big Karen Wilson fan; there were several questionable calls going both ways during the girls game (the most questionable being the aforementioned goal that was called off).  If Karen Wilson is the best NSAA has to offer for a state championship game, then they must be hurting.  As for the boys game, I thought it was officiated well.  I thought a couple of cards could have been given when Zuerlein was obviously being hacked repeatedly, but the officials seemed rather transparent throughout the game, which is how it should be.
