First Flight Out of Here

By: Mr. Wilson on June 29, 2009
So much for that little experiment. After a short three weeks, Delta is pulling the plug on its Atlanta and Salt Lake City flights from Lincoln Airport. I doubt the news itself comes as a surprise to most of you, though the short lifespan of the routes is a bit odd. Poor Lincoln Airport. It just can't quite seem to find an identity. What I'm not able to put my finger on -- and what you may be able to help identify -- is the cause. Is it a leadership/personnel problem? An airline problem? A market problem? But maybe that's putting the cart before the horse. What is Lincoln Airport's identity?

This reminds me of a network pulling the plug on a TV show after one or two low-rated outings. Considering the routes are new, I would think it would take a little time for people to settle in. You would have had to be planning a trip and known in advance those routes were coming to really use them.

I think what sucks about this airport is that you almost always have to go someplace first in order to get someplace. In other words, Chicago to wherever, or Denver to wherever. You can drive 50 miles up the road - it’s 30 minutes from my house to the Lincoln Airport or about 55 minutes to Omaha - and have a higher chance of maybe getting straight somewhere else - Detroit, Minneapolis, Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, etc.

Also, a lot of times, you can save a lot of money even flying United from Omaha rather than here. I don’t know the answer, but more planes would help.

Exactly. Omaha has the convenience of non-stop flights and cheaper fares. Lincoln can’t compete with that.

Then how is Grand Island adding flights as we lose them? Is their population growing faster or was that area always under served?

Seems like Lincoln just needs four flights: Chicago, Denver, PHX, and ATL.

If I really cared, I’d look into the miscommunication between Delta and LAA about the nature of the flights.  I’d also question why the LAA is composed of more than one full-time person.  I guess Omaha has a better product and will just make Lincoln’s attempt at that product fail.  Oops I was thinking about the arena for a second.

It would be helpful to have more flights to those destinations as well.

Alright, let me change that from ‘more than one full-time person’ to ‘more than one person’. They’re advertising a ‘New Delta Service’ on their website ...
