Eating at the Union
UNL’s Student Union has hosted a number of different restaurants over the years. Currently the lineup is: Sbarro; Imperial Palace Express; Subway; and Burger King. But the lineup will soon get a shake-up. Burger King is leaving, to be replaced by Runza. That swap makes sense to me. On the other hand, the thought of Planet Sub replacing Subway boggles my mind. Maybe I’m just biased because I can’t get my disastrous first visit to Planet Sub out of my mind. But even on a good visit the food takes a few minutes to prepare. Can that work in a busy food court?
Notably, this opens the door for Burger King to locate somewhere else in Downtown. It has always seemed weird to me that there wasn’t a BK or McDonald’s Downtown. I could see the former Taco Bueno location hosting a BK in the near future.

There used to be a downtown McDonalds on O Street. I want to say it was the SE corner of 14th and O (is that north of the Library where all the buses stop?). Can’t recall for sure when it closed, but it was there in the late 80’s.

It was where Sandy’s is located now. The doors are orig McD’s doors and when you head back to the bathrooms you can see where the tiles on the floor change from where the kitchen was.

Yes there WAS a McD’s at 14th and “O”. Seems that the corporate execs decided they didn’t want to provide a place for people waiting for the bus, coming in on a cold day and asking for water. Seems that every time I went there a police cruiser was either already there or would arrive shortly afetr I did. Just to run someone out that was either just sitting there or causing some sort of problems.
Attitude of the employees generally sucked too.

The biggest surprise in all this is Planet Sub claims that the P St. location will remain open.
(OT: Where did yesterday’s post about the City/LJS shenanigans go? I see the Children’s Zoo post has reappeared...)

The Zoo post wasn’t supposed to show up until today. I had originally set the date incorrectly. I pulled the other post temporarily to correct an error and add an addendum, but I didn’t have time yesterday afternoon to get to it. Then when I had time last night, I screwed it up, accidentally deleting parts I wanted to keep. I got frustrated and gave up, so now it’s sitting in a jumble, with a status of “pending”.

I for one welcome the planet sub. The restaurants in the union suck, and i think planet sub is the best sub sandwich place in the downtown area.
personally, I prefer there being no BK or McDs downtown. I honestly would prefer it if there were no national chains downtown. They just take away from the character of Lincoln.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who can’t get over the complete disaster that was Planet Sub. Not once since then have I seriously thought about going in there.
I’m sure they’ve since improved their process, but it can’t possibly be as fast as Subway. When I was in school and only had a few minutes to eat, I knew, no matter how long the line was, that Subway would have me through in no more than 5-10 minutes. Planet Sub doesn’t have a chance at that.

Wow, I love Planet Sub.
I stop by on the weekends so I don’t know how fast they are during the week.
My advice is to give them a fresh shot now they’ve been open awhile.
