Dirt and a Backhoe
I need some dirt. I’m not sure how much dirt I want to bring in, but I think I’m going to start with 10 or 12 yards. That ought to give me plenty to play with for now. The standard supplier for such things seems to be GE Landscape Supply. Can anybody recommend anyone else?
I could also use a backhoe. I need to get rid of the remnants of a stump, and I think my only two remaining options are (1) heavy machinery, and (2) dynamite. As much as I would love to go for option #2, I think #1 is probably going to win out. I don’t suppose any of you own a backhoe, do you? I suppose it would be pressing my luck even more to hope that you work for beer and pizza…

I suppose it wouldn’t be legal in city limits, but charcoal and some patience work pretty well for getting rid of stumps. If you’ve got a charcoal grill, grill up some burgers. Then dump the coals on the stump. If they catch, they’ll gradually burn away at the stump, even down into the roots. Growing up on the farm, we tried it on a huge stump from a tree lost to Dutch elm disease. It took several weeks, but it worked. You barely noticed it smoldering. It even survived through a couple of rain storms.

I’m digging out my front yard to slope it. There will be plenty of free, available dirt as a result. My in laws want some as well.

You could try RK (Rieimers Kaufman)- when I got rock, they were cheaper than GE - both for material and delivery. The nurseries usually sell dirt, too. It’s worth a few calls.

10-12 Yards??? Thats a lot. How much work are you doing. And I would recomend a stump grinder.

I agree with Rip, a stump grinder is the way to go. Plus it’s a really cool machine
. I’ve never used RK, but the people at GE really know their stuff. To me it’s worth the few dollars more sometimes to have them help me calculate what I really need.

My parents have used Mr. Amoto Lawn & Tree Service for stump removal in the past, & no complaints.

currently, i am employed as a handyman (as a supplement to my main job) ... i’d be willing to level all that dirt for you by hand. my going rate is $15/hr. think about it. LOL!
