My favorite story today in the paper - learning that SlapShotz closed its doors. Why? Blame the smoking ban, of course!

The bar was smoke-free for its entire three-year run. At first, that was a huge advantage (to hear them tell it), but then everyone went smoke-free and it killed their business.

My take - if you have a restaurant that was once pretty busy, and now it’s not, is it possible that a) the food quality has declined, or b) the service is not what it once was, or c) that the value is not there (too much money/too small a portion, etc.)?

Do we really think that after a year or two now (I forget, but I think it’s been two years), that the smoking ban can be blamed? Good lord.

It’s hard to tell from the article if Slapshotz’ owners are blaming the smoking ban for the closure, or if they’re just citing it as a factor in the sense of “we used to have a competitive advantage in that regard, and now we don’t”. The former is, of course, ridiculous. The latter makes perfect sense, though it implies the smoke-free atmosphere is about the only thing Slapshotz had going for it.

As a patriot, i oppose the government telling businesses how to operate.

But as a non-smoker, I’m absolutely loving the smoke-free environment.

The statewide smoking ban should be written the same way as the POS CCW law, where people can choose whether or not they want to enforce it.

It’s hard to imagine that a place that substituted a Z for an S didn’t have much going for it.

I demand being able to bring my guns and smoke cigars in the neonatal unit.  How dare they take away my rights?

Slapshotz was actually a great place, clean, very good food and good service. I think it’s main problem was it’s on the fringe of Lincoln.

I was just in there a week or two ago and I heard the owner trying to give someone directions to the place. It was not easy when he was trying to use South Pointe as the landmark and Slapshotz was just south of 14th and Pine Lake Road.

I will miss their fish and chips. Sometimes you’d get a piece of fish as big as your forearm.

My wifes work would have outings there often.  I think it was mostly because it was not too busy, near many employees homes, and the fact that they had really big mugs of Guinness for cheap.

I never ate there, but swung by a few times after bike rides in Wilderness park.  I heard you could see a trail from the Jamaica North path right to the building.

They have some serious restrictions about people in the neonatal unit.  So even if you can get in, I doubt they’ll let you bring your cigars and guns with you.

Just out of curiosity, do you oppose the CIA’s ‘domestic’ phone surveillance program?

I oppose that it was done illegally and congress is trying to protect those who did the illegal acts by granting retroactive immunity to the telcos who knowingly broke the law.  The surveillance could of easily been done within the law, and should of been.

Of course I support monitoring of the bad guys, especially through the FISA courts.  Obtaining a warrant was easy and they had up to 72 hours to get the warrant.

I am also a strong supporter of what the 4th amendment used to stand for. 

Don’t really understand why you would bring that up though.

Pretty much how I feel.  If I were a business owner I wouldn’t like govt. telling me how to run my business.

I LOVED the smoke free ban when I lived in Lincoln.  Now that I live in North Platte there are some places that I go that have a haze in the building from all the smoking.  I play bar poker at one place and i routinely have at LEAST 4 people at the table smoking.  I would love it if the state passed the statewide ban.  Governmental control be damned.

The smoking ban stops little childrens from getting into college. :(

I completely agree with Seinor wiltshire as I bet D to the K does.  Keep govt out of this kind of crap, but damn I love the smoke free places.

My life partner smokes, but has severe respect for me.  If it is nice out she smokes outside.

Strangest thing when we visited Mexico was you could smoke anywhere and stores had ashtrays spread around.

I worked as a bartender during the smoking times and I would keep my work shirt in my car cuz it stunk so bad.

I rode my bike to Davey and the moment I stepped in the smoke filled bar I had to run outside and puke from the exercise and smoke.

I hate smoky places but think it is lame it is legislated.  At least the tobacco lobbyists have been loosing so it is a mixed bag for me.

Very true.  I love being able to go to restaurants, bars, etc. without breathing in smoke and therefore smelling like it when I got home. 

Sure, the government tells business owners how to run their business in some regards.  Banning smoking is going a little far with that, and dare I say ‘slippery slope’.  I would feel a lot better about a smoking ban if it was imposed by the business owners.

As for Slapshotz, I had it confused with whatever joint that is at 48th and Hwy 2 near Earl May.

Mike Huckabee wants a NATIONWIDE smoking ban, so that would take care of things.

That’s the Penalty Box.  I made the same mistake.  And your Z for S comment made me laugh hard!
