Deena Winter on the Firestorm

By: Mr. Wilson on November 13, 2006
Kudos to Deena Winter for her lengthy piece in yesterday's Journal Star on the firetruck controversy. It was exactly the sort of article I had hoped the LJS would run: a straightforward, chronological analysis of how a simple firetruck purchase could go so badly. Thanks, Deena. Ms. Winter's article is perfect for evaluating Mayor Seng's statement that Lincolnites should thank her for her actions related to the controversy:
I think I should be thanked quite a bit because I fired the fire chief.
I'm curious how many of you agree with her self-assessment.

She shouldn’t be thanked for anything,
since she let $470k in fines slide.  Her only rationalization for dismissing the fines is that she didn’t want the process to be bogged down in appeals.  It’s evident that the fines were justified, given Mellen’s anxiety when he learned he was going to be charged them, and his need for Spadt’s help in getting them waived.

Because Seng waived the fines at Spadt’s request, I’m inclined to believe she had at least a little something to do with the scandal.  Her and Spadt appeared to be on the same side until it was no longer possible for her to cover her ass, which is when she fired him.  Therefore, since Spadt’s involvement is shady, and Seng appeared to be supporting him, Seng’s involvement is at the very least suspicious.

There’s a reason Spadt and EDM were in bed together.  It’s a shame that the reason will probably never be uncovered. Since he pleaded the Fifth during the investigation, there’s reason to suspect he did something illegal.  As someone in the comments section mentioned, this is something you usually see in Chicago.  But as another comment stated, this was exciting, something that is a rarity in Lincoln.

I think it is politically risky for a mayor to ask people to thank her for her role in a scandal like this.

I would like to hear what Spadt got from EDM for risking his job like he did.

I think it sucks the way they keep leaving John Huff out to dry.  He’s a firefighter, not a politician.  Need to send someone to sift thru the rubble in OKC when a building comes down?  He’s your guy.  Need to send someone to the Pentagon after 9/11?  He’s your guy.  Need to send help to the Gulf Coast after Katrina?  Sign him up.  We could use his leadership, and more good people on the team, and a lot less politicians.  Even the article shows there’s little to no proof of his involvement.  We are still paying him - get him back on the force!
