Date Night
Each Wednesday evening The Missus and I have a “date night.” Typically we just go somewhere to eat and then go home and watch a movie, play a couple rounds of Scrabble, or take Daisy for a walk. Occasionally we get more adventurous, but the real point is that we don’t schedule anything that would conflict with date night. I bet we’ve only missed date night five times over the past couple years. Some of our best conversations have come on date night. Heck, I think we even made the big decision on date night.
The Missus and I have a habit of being a bit indecisive when it comes to choosing a place to eat on date night. So today I’m going to give you all a say. Where should The Missus and I eat tonight? Should we enjoy the fine service at Lazlo’s? (Downtown or South?) Is Olive Garden featuring a special we ought to try? How ‘bout a little lamb at The Parthenon? Maybe a cheese frenchee and chocolate shake at Don & Millie’s? Or crab cakes at Beacon Hills?
Fire away with your suggestions!

El Rancho. I haven’t had dinner there yet (I’m told by people other than Jeff Korbelik that it’s terrific) but I’ve had great lunches twice in the last month.

Drive out to Omaha and go to M’s Pub. The rack of lamb is divine.

You both were outvoted by The Missus. She opted for Olive Garden. However, El Rancho was on the short list thanks, in part, to Steve reminding me about it. The next time we go for Mexican, we’ll almost certainly try El Rancho.
Mr. T, I should’ve known you’d suggest something that involves lamb. What is it with you and the consumption of cute fuzzy critters?

I ate at El Rancho Thursday night and remembered you mentioning The Missus was a vegetarian (I could be wrong). It might be hard to get a veggie meal there.

She’s a semi-veg. She eats poultry and seafood, but not red meat. That makes it possible to find something to eat pretty much anywhere.
When it comes to food cooked in lard and other goodies, she is pretty good about just closing her eyes and not thinking about it. She runs into that a lot at mom ‘n’ pops and many Mexican restaurants.

I know this comment comes way after the fact, but I’m a vegetarian and I easily found something to eat at El Rancho tonight. I asked the server to recommend something - he suggested bean and cheese pupusas, bean burritos, veggie tacos, or nachos. I had the pupusas, and they were completely wonderful. My husband had the veggie tacos - these were soft corn tortillas filled with freshly grilled mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, red and green peppers. His meal came with a side of refried black beans and rice.
I have to admit that Mexican is tough for a vegetarian - especially with things like rice and beans, which may contain chicken stock and/or lard. We call it the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ cuisine
