Bruning Bowing Out?

By: Mr. Wilson on November 20, 2007
Could it be true? Is Jon Bruning leaving the Senate race before the race even really begins? If it is true, I don't get it. Why quit so early? I don't think he'll win, but that doesn't mean I don't think he could win. And it's not like he and Johanns have to worry about beating up on each other so much that a Democrat could sneak into the seat. Nebraska's Democrats are down to, what, their 43rd choice at this point? Maybe Bruning's campaign knows something we don't. Perhaps they're afraid more details about Bruning's inappropriate behavior could come out if he stays in the race. That would screw up his Senate ambitions and his career as Attorney General. Maybe there's some other skeleton in his closet. Or perhaps Bruning is just choosing to focus on the areas in which he knows he can have success. It's an awfully conservative approach for somebody as driven as Jon Bruning, but it's not an unreasonable way to go. Without some external motivator, I don't understand Bruning's decision. (If it's true, of course.) It seems premature. Then again, it wouldn't be the first time Bruning's actions have confused me.

He’s just doing whatever he needs to get elected.  Oh wait…

When Bruning out of the Senate race and Callahan and Co. soon to be fired, who are Nebraskans going to hate?

I think the external motivator is simple: money. He knows that the Washington dollars are behind Johanns and that he won’t be able to raise enough here in Nebraska. For whatever reason, Johanns is too formidable a candidate and Bruning is quickly realizing it will be a waste of his time and resources.

Where’s that obligatory post from “JonBruningforSenate2008”? I know I’ve said in the past that he shouldn’t be underestimated, but always with the caveat that if Johanns jumped in, Johanns will win. Maybe Jon Bruning saves face now, stays as AG, and takes a run at Ben’s seat in 4 years. Smart play, of course by then maybe Heineman will want a run at that seat. Then, Jon could run for Gov. I am sure, if he bows out, it’s not the last we’ll see of him by a long shot.

I think Fletch is on the right track. I think he just knows if he stays in this until the end, he’s going to burn all the political bridges that he’ll need intact for his future political career. He’s still young, so I think he’s just going to wait his turn.

Selfishly I’m bummed because he’s a good “original cartoons” customer. 😉

Nice scoop for Don Walton on this one. When will Pat “Pass the doritos” Flynn drop out?

Pat Flynn claimed on the news last night that he won’t drop out (or they quoted him as such).

How silly does Bruning’s campaign manager look for calling it wild speculation and rumor in the paper the same day he quits the race? Do these people really think that such spin still works in this day and age?
