Bridge Over Heavy Traffic

By: Mr. Wilson on February 12, 2009
The long awaited MoPac Trail bridge over North 27th Street is in place. The new section of trail should be open by May -- just in time for our summer enjoyment. I've got to say I'm a little surprised the City didn't take the opportunity to dress up the bridge as part of ongoing North 27th Street prettification efforts. Surprised, but not necessarily disappointed; the wrong decorations could really create an eyesore we're stuck with for years. Maybe plain Jane is best.

I am really looking forward to this.  I participated in a poker ride to raise funds for this a few years back.

It will be nice when the trail is done.  To hit the mopac I have to ride 30 blocks of side streets.

At least they did not have to spend extra $ to spice it up.  That seems to agitate taxpayers.

What’s west of the bridge?  Is it concrete, limestone?  How far does it go?

I was trying to find that out.  Not really sure.  I have not explored the paved trails around UNL and the AVP much yet.  It is supposta connect to UNL though.  It would be paved I bet.  The in town ones usually are.  Once you hit the edge of the city they go limestone.  I do some more searching.

I am very excited for the completion of the North end of the Jamaica north trail.  It will be right on my block and make it a bit easier to hit wilderness park.

According to UNL’s master plan (PDF, see page 50), the old MoPac right-of-way is supposed to be used for the trail between City Campus and 27th.

The city’s Antelope Valley Project documents shows a route that goes from Vine to 22nd to W to 24th to the old MoPac right-of-way.

Aren’t those two different trails? Unless I’m looking at the wrong spots—a distinct possibility—it looks to me like the City’s two maps (1 | 2) match up pretty well with UNL’s Master Plan.

It’s a concrete trail that snakes through the neighborhood back there and comes up just east of Whittier (I believe) on Vine.  It’s meant to link up nicely with the trail that runs from the Beadle Center to the zoo and beyond.
