Bourdain Visits Lincoln
A closely guarded secret, Travel Channel superstar and author Anthony Bourdain of No Reservations fame was in town this week to film scenes for a future show. No one seems to know if this was for No Reservations or for some other series or special. Guess we will find out sometime later. give a talk at UNL, and unfortunately, did not do any filming according to a commenter (sigh).

...as he had a book signing/speaking event last night at UNL.
However, I’m quite baffled at the complete lack of coverage about his visit in the DN, UNL’s Web site (except for a paragraph here, the Journal Star, etc.

I saw the first coverage/sentence of this about a day before he was speaking on campus. Why this didn’t get more play defies logic.
If you were to direct him to places to sample local cuisine, where would you send him? Runza? The Dish? Venue? That hotdog place on A Street?

my incomplete list:
m&n;sandwich shop - pastrami and italian beef. and norm, of course.
the watering hole - hot grilled wings and cold beer.
la mexicana - a restaurant in the back of a mexican grocery store. perfect! tacos de chorizo are my favorite, but tony might want to try the tacos de lengua (tongue) or buche (stomach).
and yeah, i’d get him a runza too.

Dish and Venue are good restaurants but hardly unique. Runza is an experience everyone should have at least once, for me that was enough.
How about Tastee?? Nothing like it anywhere else that I know.

In Iowa there is a franchise called Maid-Rite that makes maid-rites, which are the same sort of spicy, loose meat sandwiches like Tastees. The closest one I know of is in the I-80 road station about 30 minutes east of Council Bluffs.

Iowa probably stakes a bigger claim on Tastee’s loose meat sandwich than Lincoln does. But Runza is definitely a Nebraska thing.
It’s actually a little difficult to come up with food/restaurants that are unique.
Misty’s on the Friday before a home game is always pretty cool for the atmosphere.

i didn’t know he was filming in lincoln. does anyone know where he filmed?
i heard him speak (it was great). someone asked if he had tried a runza. he hadn’t heard of it, but based on the description he said “what’s not to like?” i’m curious about whether he ate one and what he thought of it.

I also wonder if he stopped anywhere in town for a bite. Some people told me they were doing filming somewhere, you’d really think there would be more noise about this if it was true. I also heard his crew was in town at least twice (once without him) so who knows what’s up.

Sorry to disappoint you all, but Bourdain did not do any filming in Lincoln. He was in town for the University Program Council-sponsored event at Kimbal Recital Hall.

i walked out of lecture on the 19th and caught a very “uncatchy” poster for Bourdain on a bulletin board in Henzlik Hall… stating he would be there speaking and signing books on the 17th.
i literally yelled, “WHAT?!! NOOOOOOO!!!” and about 20 college peeps around me thought i had lost my mind. that was seriously the most depressing day of my week.
bourdain is a genius and speaks his mind—he basically says what all of us with the passion for all-things-culinary think. LOL!
i thought about the recommendation thing too; i would have to direct him to Venue for upscale dining, but for local nebraska fair, Runza would be the way to go.

Some of you have stated that UPC did a poor job of promoting this event. If that is the case, why was it sold out? If you’re looking for something to complain about, try the media. Neither the Daily Nebraskan nor the DN wrote anything about Bordain’s appearance. Disappointing.
