Bolton: The End Nears

By: Mr. T on May 26, 2005
I will be the first to admit that in the past few months, I have become obsessed with the debate over John Bolton's confirmation as UN ambassador.* After this deal over federal court appointees, it looks likely that Bolton will get through to the post. Today, George Voinovich broke down into tears in an emotional episode emphasizing his opposition to the placement. Tomorrow, more debate is to occur, and possibly even a vote, although the Dems are now trying to tie things up procedurally. Damn, why watch reality TV when the Bolton hearings have been ten times more exciting? Its better than Lost! *Yes, I know it is pathetic.

*Yes, I know it is pathetic.

Yes. Yes it is.

Voinovich broke down in tears? That’s pathetic. Not that crying itself is pathetic. But bawling over the ambassador to the UN? Puh-leeze.

I look at it this way: Bolton’s appointment won’t be nearly as tragic as his opponents claim. The world will not end, just as it did not end when Bush was elected or re-elected. But if Bolton does fubar, Bolton’s opponents get to have a party and mock the crap out of Bush and congressional Republicans. Hell, if the Dems think Bolton is a steaming pile of elephant dung, they should get him to the UN pronto. Bolton is free (and plentiful) ammunition, just like Howard Dean.

Bolton has been beat up and embarassed enough that there is no way he will mess things up at the UN when he gets there (if he gets there and I think he probably will - although it looks like the delay did occur today).
