Black Friday

By: Mr. Wilson on November 23, 2007
I really don't like the term "Black Friday". It's such an ugly term. It reminds me of the Black Death. That's not what the marketers are going for, I'm sure. Then again, some people would say that the rampant consumerism that happens on Black Friday is somehow analogous to the Black Death. That characterization is a tad over-the-top for my tastes, but then again, so is Black Friday. Anyway, The Wilsons will be venturing into the Black Friday crowds today, if only by accident. The Missus scheduled a family photo at JC Penney's at 1:00pm. Yes, we're going to Gateway on Black Friday. And yes, I'm getting my photo taken in the middle of a Husker game. *sigh* Look for us if you're out there. We'll be the only people at Gateway not shopping. Are any of you braving the Black Friday crowds today? What deals did you get?

I braved them at 6 am at Menards - got what I went for and was out the door at 6:07 am. Went to Wal-Mart next door, found three more door-busting deals and was happy. Hit a handful more stores (the mall, Shopko, Toys R Us) by Noon and got a bunch of gifts taken care of. I was standing at the end of a long line at Menards, but I only got there 5 minutes before the door opened and it didn’t keep me from my task once inside.

The clear winner for worst (slow and LONG) lines and worst crowd management was Kohl’s. Once we saw the lines, we didn’t even buy a thing there. Oh well.

Fun day! I love Black Friday. The term was coined because this was theoretically the day that retailers would move “into the black” for the year. I tend to doubt it takes companies 11 months to do that, but whatever.

Also learned today that KB is closing at Gateway, so all sales there are FINAL.

Peace out, me peeps!

I did Radio Shack at 8:30 (2GB CF Card $17.99, 2GB Micro SD Card $19.99), Circuit City at 9 (total zoo - and they were out of the 2GB USB flash drives for $7.99), and then Office Max after that (2GB USB Flash for $12.99). I toyed with the thought of picking up a 22” monitor as there were several advertised at blackfriday.info (where I did my research earlier) at a few places for about $150 but opted not to, plus I knew it would be nearly impossible to get one unless I lined up someplace at like 2am.

I slept till 9:30, then did homework all day. We did go out for groceries in the evening so my husband could make his yummy lemon and lime bars. So I guess I failed the buy nothing day challenge.
