A Nebraska Primer for Floridians
One of my favorite hobbies leading up to Nebraska’s (almost) annual bowl games is watching press outlets do the standard “here’s everything you need to know about Nebraskans” stories for the locals. You know the kind: Nebraskans eat beef; Nebraska is flat; Nebraskans are fat; Nebraskans wear red; Nebraskans don’t know the meaning of “a la carte”; and so on. Most of the stories are trite, but occasionally you’ll find one that’s really amusing.
Laura Capitano’s ”Welcome the loveable Huskers” is definitely in the former category, so normally it wouldn’t be worth mentioning. But then I read the lone comment from a disgruntled Husker fan near the bottom of the page. (Note: The comment is PG-13.) Apparently we’re not all lovable.
Have you found any notable Nebraska stereotypes articles related to the Huskers’ upcoming appearance in the Gator Bowl? So far the pickings have been pretty slim. Not that I’m complaining. At least we’re going to a bowl game.
The Comments

I thought about registering and leaving a comment but it’s pointless. People like Laura Capitano are a dime a dozen.
Back at the 81 or 82 Orange Bowl my Mom, sister and I were debarking the team plane. We had to make our way through a kind of receiving/greeting line. A couple of the Orange Bowl staffers were overheard wondering if
Nebraskans had indoor plumbing yet.
My Mom heard the exchange and blurted out something along the lines of “yep, durn tootin’ we still got our outhouses”.
I clearly remember many in the line bursting our laughing. It was classic.

Ah yes. North Florida, bastion of culture. I believe it’s known as “The Rome of the West”.

I think of the Homer Simpson quote. “Florida, America’s wan_”. Insert letter after f.

She wasn’t all that bad, I didn’t think.
Tom says I don't get it December 31, 2008 at 11:17am
She’s a former Nebraskans herself, and most of what she said is true. I didn’t get the feeling she was being negative at all on Nebraskans.
If anything I think Nebraskans are too sensitive about themselves...lighten up, most people (who have an opinion) think positively about us anyway.

I agree. She wasn’t that bad and Nebraskans have a persecution complex. It wasn’t ten minutes this morning before I heard someone complaining that the announcers of the Gator Bowl were certainly prejudiced against the Huskers and refused to give us any credit for winning. I watched the whole game and didn’t hear any of that.

I actually thought they talked about Joe Ganz too much and not enough about Suh. Who should have gotten MVP in my opinion.
