A Lincoln Potluck
This is an odd topic, I know, but bear with me. The other day I was chatting with Lincoln expat DMB, and the topic of potlucks came up. He had attended a potluck supper in Imperial (waaaay out in Southwest Nebraska), so we were talking about the dishes he had eaten. To my dismay, most of the dishes I consider to be standard potluck fare were absent.
Clearly a Lincoln potluck is different than an Imperial potluck, and presumably both are different than what you’d run into elsewhere in the country. So what dishes (or variants thereon) are all-but-required at a potluck in Lincoln? A few starters:
- Deviled eggs
- Jell-o with fruit (pears or bananas, usually)
- Tater tot casserole (hamburger, green beans, tater tots)
- Goulash (typically macaroni, hamburger, and a bland tomato sauce)
- Rice Krispy bars
What else should be on the list?

Here are some staples (some, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why)
* Green bean casserole
* Mexican pizza dip (not sure what it’s called)
* Jello fluff
* Cheesy hashbrown casserole
* Brownies
* The inevitable cop-out bag of chips
* Broccoli/raisin salad

Since moving here, I have definitely noticed that the little smokies in barbecue sauce and the hamburger/queso thing are definitely Lincoln favorites. They might be Nebraska favorites, but I will call them Lincoln faves, as that is what I know!

does this mean there’s going to be a Lincolnite.com potluck dinner soon?

Does that mean you’d come if there were?

Count me in on a potluck Mr. Wilson (depending on my schedule at the time). Especially if Russ brings fried chicken!

-That asian salad with the crushed-up ramen noodles.
-buttery corn and pasta salad
-cut-up baby ruth bars mixed with apples and cool whip
-peas, cheese, and mayonaise
-dip made out of a block of cream cheese with a jar of jalepeno jelly poured over
-and of course, the ubiquitous crock pot of sloppy joes, with a package of old home buns next to it.

I think Foxspit and Sarah have been to way too many Lincoln potlucks.
