56th, Cotner and Oh-No

By: Mr. Wilson on November 2, 2006
There was a lot of complaining about the plan to re-do the intersections and streets around 56th, Cotner and O prior to it happening. The plan seemed, to many Lincolnites, too loopy (literally). In fact, some Lincolnites still complain, demanding that the more traditional intersections return. But let me ask you this: when was the last time traffic in the area backed up like it used to? I know I haven't seen awful traffic in the area in ages, and I have never heard anybody say "Boy, that 56th, Cotner and O area is a real bear at rush hour". It makes you wonder what other non-traditional traffic solutions we ought to be considering in traffic trouble spots.

Aside from the idiots who try to turn left going westbound (and right, for that matter) on O Street at 56th, the intersection performs quite well.  Traffic is held too long going north on Cotner and South on 56th, but other than that I have no complaints.

I’d like to see them come up with something for the 48th-A-Cotner area also.  A Street is a disaster to begin with, but that intersection is a roadblock most times of the day.  When traveling down 48th, it seems you always have to stop at both A Street and Cotner.  Going down A, you always have to stop at 48th and Cotner.  And going down Cotner, you always have to stop at A and 48th.  I’d like to see Cotner eliminated from Lincoln maps, but if that isn’t going to happen, something needs to be done to improve traffic on it and near it.

I travel the 56th & Cotner areas several times a day.  The biggest issue I come across is the fact that their are no yield signs or right of way signs so people who are not familiar with the intersections will hold up traffic instead of just merging in.  Maybe providing some signage would help, but not sure.  I still think it has improved but also agree with the long wait at lights trying to cross ‘O’ Street.

Having only lived in Lincoln for a year and a half, I have to pass judgement on the Cotner & O intersection. But I couldn’t agree more about the Cotner & A intersection. It is a mess, and after driving through it twice a day for the last 18 months, I cannot believe I haven’t seen an accident there. (Or been in one myself.)

As for wiping Cotner off the maps completely… I can assume you say that in jest. Cotner is easily one of the 2 or 3 most charming residential throughfares I have ever driven. Once I close my eyes and cross my fingers and say a prayer and successfully turn north from eastbound A onto northbound Cotner each morning, I really enjoy it.
